You want an <i>answer.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>You want to learn from the master and successfully apply the principle to your business.<\/p>\n<p>Well, we\u2019ve done the research and in this post, we\u2019ve broken down the analogy and explained how what he said can genuinely help you.<\/p>\n<p>Ready? Let\u2019s dive in.<\/p>\n<h2>Who Said it<\/h2>\n<p>When the masters speak, we listen.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">When Steph Curry talks about basketball, <i>you listen.<\/i><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">When Mariah Carey talks about hitting an upper vocal range, <i>you listen.\u00a0<\/i><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">When Chris Farley talks about living in a van down by the river\u2026<i>you listen.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>You\u2019re here because you are interested in business.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So when Warren Buffet, one of the most successful businessmen and investors of all time, throws out a solid piece of advice about business practice, <b>you listen.<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>&#8220;You have to understand accounting and you have to understand the nuances of accounting. <\/i><b><i>It&#8217;s the language of business,<\/i><\/b><i> and it&#8217;s an imperfect language. But unless you are willing to put in the effort to learn accounting &#8211; how to read and interpret financial statements &#8211; you really shouldn&#8217;t select stocks yourself.&#8221; &#8211; <\/i><i>Warren Buffett<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Let that sink in for a moment&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cUnless you\u2019re willing to learn the language, you shouldn\u2019t be investing.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>We can take this principle one step further and say <strong>unless you understand the nuances of accounting, you shouldn\u2019t be running a business.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>What This Means For You<\/h3>\n<p>Are we saying that you have to be an accountant? No. You already have an accountant. But you need to at least <i>understand<\/i> general accounting terms.<\/p>\n<p>So, suppose you want to improve your business practices and become more successful. But once you know the language, you can communicate with anyone around the globe who speaks it.<\/p>\n<p>We usually think of language as a single concept &#8211; a set of spoken sounds categorized as English, Italian, Mandarin, or Klingon.<\/p>\n<p>If we step back, however, we realize that language, a universal communication tool, is much broader. Language can be either written or oral or both.\u00a0Music and art are just some examples.<\/p>\n<p>Accounting, for the most part, has been standardized around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>Numbers will ALWAYS add up the same way whether the one adding them speaks Portuguese, Farsi, or Canadian French.<\/p>\n<p>Investors and CEOs can use this language to understand income, expenses, financial data, financial statements, and company value in the same way worldwide.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3>How Accounting Is like a Language<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>\u201cAccounting is the language of business and you have to be as comfortable with it as you are with your own native language to really evaluate businesses.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Learning the language of accounting is in some ways, literally like learning a foreign language.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how.<\/p>\n<h3>#1 &#8211; It Requires an Investment of Time and Effort<\/h3>\n<p>Learning a new foreign language can take a massive amount of time.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Foreign Service Institute (where U.S. diplomats go to get language training), the average English native speaker needs approximately <i>2,200 hours<\/i> to get to an advanced level in Arabic! That\u2019s 1.5 years of full-time courses. (1)<\/p>\n<p>This might not be worth it if you\u2019re living in your mom\u2019s basement in central Iowa. Still, they can tell whether investing in a business is wise <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just by investigating a <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">company\u2019s<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">financial performance<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">routine business transactions.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2>You Need to Learn The Language<\/h2>\n<p>Although accounting is the language of business, <i>many executives don\u2019t speak it.<\/i> (don\u2019t listen, Mr. Buffet, they don\u2019t mean it).<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why they pay an accountant to explain things to them.
